do we NEED generative AI?

ask yourself that again. do we NEED generative AI?

there are many things that were once popular, but lost it over time. eventually, humans moved on from them, looking back and asking themselves, "do we NEED them?" justin bieber, facebook, fidget spinners, smart fridges, cryptocurrency, the xbox, and adobe products are among them.

let's add LLMs and generative AI to that list, shall we?

like many here on bearblog, i hate generative AI. i believe it to be an insult to an honest day's work; a cheat code for people to get through existence with as little effort as possible; an excuse for the rich man to treat those beneath him even worse than he already does.

my personal experience with it is this: i fooled around with it a few times back when it "sucked", and no one (including yours truly) liked the output. (but at least it was entertainingly bad.) i hate AI music so much that i now immediately turn down any clients presenting it to me on the spot. i've been told the excuse of "if you don't use it, you'll be left behind", and i disregard it every time. lately, clients have been requesting me to not use this tech in my work, and i let them know they have nothing to worry about; that i'm proudly anti-genAI.

so, do we really need it? humans have been able to craft works of art, albums, novels, essays, work emails, resumes, programs, translations, and edited photos just fine without it for decades, even centuries. but all of a sudden, the rich man wants us to believe that we're incapable of any of those things without their mediocre, energy-guzzling, planet-destroying computer program doing it all for us? i don't think so, rich man.

if anything, the growing backlash against this technology among the younger generations, plus the fact that it's not profitable in the slightest means that, eventually, we can look back and ask ourselves, do we NEED generative AI?

and the answer will be a resounding "NO."
