finishing your work early
i believe i've mentioned this before, but one of the joys of being a freelancer is that you can work whenever you want, as long as you meet your deadlines. however, there is a drawback: having the freedom to choose your own hours means you might catch yourself working from sunrise to sunset. and that's not good. i wouldn't recommend that for anyone, and i especially hate when companies make their employees work for almost 70% of the day.
so, i'm trying something new this week. i'll get up early in the morning (around 7-8 AM), work on my video orders for about 5 hours until the early afternoon... and then just stop, call it a day, and spend the rest of my time doing whatever. maybe hop back in briefly and do some more work, but not too much. and after dinner time, i stop doing any work altogether.
so far, this experiment seems to be working. i feel like i'm getting a lot done during the work period i assign myself in the morning, and i come out of it feeling more accomplished. i feel like we'd be in a better shape as a society if work is appreciated based on how well it was done, and not on how long workers stayed in the office doing it. because if you're on an hourly salary and you finish your work early, what are you supposed to do the rest of the day? wait until you can go home? that's no good at all.
humans aren't truly happy if all they do every hour is work, work, work. heck, even many animals in the wilderness have their own feeding schedules that last a few hours, and spend the rest of the day resting or socializing with their groups. it's nice, and humans should learn to appreciate that more. especially executives, and people who are married to the job. a "grind" isn't worth it if you have no time to do anything else in your life.
